Review of Southside with You (2016) by Carol M — 05 Sep 2016
"You think you're reeeeal smooth, don't you?" Much less a political movie than biopic, this is a fun, sweet story about a young gun law associate, maybe a little too sure of himself, taking on the task of wooing an attorney at the firm.
The fact that they happened to become America's First Family is both irrelevant and completely contextual to this Chicago love story. Parker Sawyers steals the show as this year's Daniel Day Lewis with a dead-on Barack, a highly studied and nuanced performance that suspends all disbelief.
Tika Sumpter plays a highly skeptical Michelle Robinson to less verisimilitude, but delivers a fine performance. This one reminds us how history is built not by grand victories or manifest destiny but by small forks in the road, and would America be the same without a young Barry getting ice cream for a pissed-off Michelle near the end of the evening? Anyway, see it and enjoy it.
