Review of Southpaw (2015) by Myles S — 03 Sep 2015
It's a formulaic Clichéd boxing melodrama. Gyllenhaal is a great actor and he would carry the film if he could actually box, but he can't. It's a performance reminiscent of Diana Ross' penalty at USA '94.
If McAdams could have survived even 10 minutes longer this car crash could have been avoided. Instead we're treated to a montage of predictable "dumb boxer life death spiral" followed by an equally predictable comeback montage (without the montage) and a hollow victory ending with Gyllenhaal telling his spoilt brat of a daughter how brave she is.
This would have worked out much better if the kid was murdered instead. There's a sentence you don't hear every day.
