Review of Southpaw (2015) by Billy D — 14 Oct 2015
Don't get me wrong, there are points where it seems to sway towards being a typical boxing movie, but this is a really good flick. Strong all the way through. From the fighting scenes to the character building to the fight for a family to stay together, it touches on a lot of major emotional points, but keeps the edge and toughness of a real fighter.
Another in a good string of strong performances by Gyllenhaal...and its nice to finally have a reason for Whitaker's eye worked into a script (let alone his strong performance). Well worth the 123 minutes.
