Review of Southpaw (2015) by Brandon C — 09 Feb 2016
After viewing this modern boxing story about a man who had everything and after losing someone very close to him he goes onto nearly lose everything on a downward spiral before getting himself squared away and making a miraculous comeback I continue to grow into the Jake Gylenhaal band wagon.
Jake's performance is not only physically demanding (he's shredded into fantastic shape following his equally intriguing performance as Lou Bloom in Nightcrawler) but also his demeanor leaves you as a viewer sympathizing with his character so much.
The other awe inspiring performance is from Jake's character's daughter who is actually I feel giving the most honest emotional performance out of everyone; and adding Forrest Whitaker and Amy Adams into the mix as long with tight direction from Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, King Arthur) and this film is a solid experience.
Other than some minor but picks like the story takes the spiritual journey of Rocky, the character turmoil of Raging Bull, and the family dynamics of Cinderella Man/ The Fighter; and in filming the actual boxing like it was something from Friday Night Fights.
These are my only negatives but there's more than enough to recommend here for a more than deserved 3.25 out of 5.
