Review of Southpaw (2015) by Sanserif — 28 Jul 2015
I walked into the movie without expectations... It was pretty bad. I started falling asleep. I know it's a boxing movie and it's range is pretty limited in terms of story beats. But c'mon, it was pretty boring. The script just didn't have any meat to it. Everything Forrest Whitaker said was really trite and there was no profound, inspiring moment to take away. The final thing he says to inspire Jake Gyllenhaal was something to the effect of 'Now go beat his ass!'. Not sure if the coaches really inspire boxers like that but... ugh. That kind of writing is not worth my money. TV has better writing these days.
However - Props to Jake Gyllenhaal for the transformation. He plays a great 'jock'. Too bad the film felt really uninspired.
