Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Pavel R — 13 Jul 2009
There's so much happening but absolutely nothing going on.
Apart from the odd chuckle, Southland Tales is just not worth the near two and a half hours you put into it. It's amazing how they managed to get the cast they did.... Dwayne Johnson, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and even Kevin Smith, and then theres a billion other C-listers that you'd notice too.
Which makes it a shame really, I mean, lets face it, none of the cast is really an international A-List superstar, but individually they have all had their own small successes.
It's relatively long, turns into a music video half-way through the film and is inconsistent with what type of film it wants to be. Starting off it sounds like a futuristic serious-toned military flick, then seconds later, an amnesia ridden hero writing screenplays? Alot of it just doesnt make sense. I'm not dumb but I think you'd find it hard to find someone who will understand what is happening throughout, and then give it the time of day to watch again to figure it all out.
Bought for £2.75, but it's more of a rental really, if there's hardly anything else to watch it the store.
Fair play though, it has its moments, moments you'll chuckle, moments which completely turn the course of the storyline on its head, moments which given some thought show some realism and have a little bit of the 'cool' fatcor going on.
But aside from that, just don't give it the time of day.
