Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Steve H — 03 Aug 2009
This film is one big, over-extended headtrip, but the line between adrenaline pumping and migraine inducing is far too frequently crossed. Moreover, the storyline bends and stretches and then collapses in on itself only to be completely rehashed just when you're getting to grips with the initial concepts.
Far too heady and ambituous, neither the director or cast seem to really know what they're doing here. The ideas and setpieces in this film are pretty interesting and gloriously satirical; But this all falters under an erractic script and far too much self indulgence.
The visual style is compelling throughout but doesn't compensate for the films overt flaws. Interesting, but far too bloated to be entertaining.
