Review of Southland Tales (2007) by Dan H — 23 Jun 2011
What the f***???? Extremely baffling, weird, incoherent, surreal nonsense. I read a detailed plot synopsis of this while watching the film, but still couldn't follow what was happening! By the start of the third act (labelled part 6) I'd pretty much given up trying.
All credit to the lead actors for turning in good performances which play against type, even Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who surprised me. But good acting, a great soundtrack and stylish visuals can't hide a massively flawed film experience.
Supposedly it makes more sense if you read the graphic novel prequel (parts I, II, III) before the film (parts IV, V, and VI) but I won't be bothering! But this has divided audiences and so it's worth watching if you're a fan of Donnie Darko (which I am) just to see what you reckon.
