Review of Southern Comfort (1981) by Erm Christ G — 16 Jan 2009

This movie hi-lights the unique and demanding training the navy se... er I mean National Guard under take in the United States. A bunch of them move through the bayou with all the stealth of a march band, and as well organised as the boy scouts. All the time being hunted by an unknown terror!!! A group of..... over weight and untrained cajuns... one of which only has one arm LOL!! It's almost too good to be true.

It all starts when they steal some canoes, which is obviously a crime that carries the penalty of DEATH in Louisiana LOL!! And if it doesn't, no-body told the locals LOL!!! These masters of chicken seasoning don't really have to try much to hunt the guardsmen down, they needn't have worried.... half of them manage to kill themselves LOL!! There's this one guy who for some reason rips open his shirt and paints a red cross on his chest as a .... joke... don't you get it? lol. He later turns into a vegetable and hangs himself LOL!! It's like the writer had plans for him but then forgot about him so had to tie up his loose end.

I think this was trying to be a Viet Nam film but without a budget, American 'soldiers' but in where they're not wanted, steal some canoes and then are out gunned by people who know the land, just like Nam. But in this little parody the Americans win, surprisingly thanks to a gay couple, one of which; after one rainy day in the woods loses his temper and kills Fred Ward, and the other manages to keep his hair washed and blow dryed throughout the entire adventure lol. He must have brought his CAMP survival kit..... get it... camp ?? Forget it LOL!! You can tell Carradine's character was supposed to be gay, firstly by his well turned out appearance, but also because he hung in the background bitching about the rest of his troop to the new guy and as soon as he sees an opportunity to sieze power he takes it, and get everyone killed apart from him and his potential boyfriend LOL!!

This film is equaly as informative about cajuns. They like too music, eating chicken, their idea of a town is a shack in the wood and if you touch their canoes.... they'll fucking kill ya!!! LOL!! They become ragein' cajuns LOL!!
