Review of Southbound (2015) by Tyler R — 12 Feb 2016
Southbound is an anthology film by the producers of the V/H/S series and it's essentially 5 segments all based around this one stretch of desert highway. The Way Out directed by Radio Silence features two men trying to get out of town who end up in a sort of time loop.
Siren directed by Roxanne Benjamin is about a band whose car breaks down and they get help from a seemingly nice couple but they harbor some dark secrets. The Accident directed by David Bruckner features a man hitting a woman with his car and then trying all he can to save her in a hospital where everybody has mysteriously disappeared.
Jailbreak directed by Patrick Horvath features a man looking for his sister and finding that maybe she doesn't want to be found. The Way In is again directed by Radio Silence and it features a family's home being invaded by a couple of masked thugs.
I thought Southbound was really creepy and very cool. My favorite segment is The Accident because the dread just keeps building through the entire segment and Mather Zickel gives a good performance as a man who is only trying to do the right thing and keeps on getting into more dire circumstances.
My least favorite of the bunch would have to be The Way In simply because it is very derivative and the tension just isn't really there. All in all Southbound is a really cool anthology film that horror fans will dig.
