Review of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) by Iain P — 03 Aug 2011
What can I say? Without a doubt my favourite animated comedy of all time! South Park as a show, has had a giant impact on the way I view the world, media and society as a whole. Unique, clever and the phrase "balls of steel" come to my mind as the show will go to all costs to amuse in the most vulgar and shocking ways possible- what we fans crave! I'd known of the movies existence, years before my becoming of a fan, as a kid I heard songs mimicked by my peers such as "uncle f*cker" and the infamous "kyles mom's a B*tch"; I always had the idea that it was pretentious, crude, swear fest with a lack of intelligance and dignity however I was so,so wrong...
The movie features the 4 main boys of the show whom we have grown to love- Stan, Kyle, Kenny and of course the anti-semetic,sadistic, yet lovable Eric Cartman! In the beginning we clearly see the directors and creators (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) intention, a musical and in hand with a politically incorrect comedy. Things seem to be pretty toned down in the first 10 minutes or so and at a glance the movie seems pretty innocent and lightweight as opposed to the often ott show, however after the boys sneak into a R rated Candian film named "asses of fire" we finally are treated (and for some shocked) to what the rest of the movie will bring.... Throughout the runtime we are treated with ingenious musical numbers, extremelly funny lines and scenarios and of course characters new and old ( Sadam and Satan come to mind) who entertain and make us laugh till the very end. Another great factor of the movie is that it never feels like an overlong episode it actually feels like a feature film! Although its a cult classic and many still love and praise it to this day many view the movie in a false sense. Many believe the movie is basically 1 and a half hours of non- stop swearing and fart jokes. It is in fact HOWEVER behind this are many strong politicial and relevant messages on todays society, the whole point of the swearing and vulgar, often sick jokes, are all part of Matt and Treys intention to elaborate how censorship can be taken way too far and misused in many circumstances. Overall though this is an aawesome movie which will most certanly make you laugh from start to finish; unless of course your a sad, old, cynical douchebag, who cant come to terms with the moral values and intelligence of south park, then stay well clear! After first watching this film 3 years ago I ahve watched it atleast 10 times and plan too watch it many more times too come, and hopefully Matt and Trey will bring us another ground breaking film in the future. Screw you guys i'm going home! ;D 9.8/10.
