Review of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) by Peregrineomega — 21 Jun 2016
Watching this moving nearly two decades later I realize it was ahead of its time. It predicted its own ridicule and outrage. It was a finger pointed back at American culture right down to the spectacle and pageantry you'd expect from a musical.
It is, afterall the same team who brought in 9 Tony awards with the Book of Mormon... second only to Phantom of the Opera. Hell, "Blame Canada" was nominated for an Oscar.
It's easy to dismiss it as "toilet humour" resorting to shock and awe for its kicks, but there's so much more behind the writing and it manages to be just as cutting to this day. Not so shocking when you consider that the TV show is still running, and the second in-house video game is due within the next year.
Trey and Matt will go down in history as one of the most important comedy duos ever. They pushed the boundaries then, and continue to do so now.
