I was very disapointed in this. I was crazy about the Bali Hi song years ago when I first heard it, so I had high expectations. When you first meet the French man, he's already in love with the lead girl.

When the luitanent falls for the Island girl, they don't show any part of them getting to know each other; he's just suddenly in love. The whole plot has holes like that. At one point the luitanent mentions that he couldn't stop thinking about the girl while he was in the hospital with malaria.

What malaria?! They never showed any of that. Besides that mangled story line, there are overpowering color filters used on some of the early songs. Of course special effects aren't going to be great in an old movie like this, but the coloring really ruins the feel of the scenes.

They're singing about what a wonderful day it is and it looks like the sky is on fire. The songs for the most part are just average. There are a few good ones. The movie's nearly 3 hours and it still feels rushed.
