Review of Source Code (2011) by Johnny B — 05 Apr 2014
I've loved Jake Gyllenhaal since "Donnie Darko". There is something so emotive about his acting style. He does "frantic" ever so well; and with that locked jaw and steel in his eyes he certainly can convey "determined".
This is a lively, fresh sci-fi story that sweeps you up and carries you along for the ride from beginning to end. It gets your brain in gear as you try to work out all the pieces. It provides the kind of action that holds you captive and doesn't bore you with countless explosions and gunfights. For a time, I was finding the film quite perfect.
It's all in an ending, however, and the ending for me was not so great. It was a bit too nicely tied up with ribbons. Perhaps if only half those ends were tied up so nicely it would have been easier to swallow. I think it just went that one step too far in the direction of "perfect" to work for me.
I wasn't familiar with Duncan Jones as a director before, but I will certainly watch for him now. It's been awhile since my husband and I enjoyed such a pleasant movie night together.
