Review of Source Code (2011) by Dave M — 27 Aug 2016
Director Duncan Jones has, in my mind, proven himself as a very capable director. His first feature, Moon, was subtle science fiction in the best of ways. With Source Code he sticks with the science fiction element and adds a bit of Hitchcockian action suspense. Think Groundhog Day meets Frequency, and if you haven't seen Frequency then do so.
The movie begins with Chicago as the main backdrop accompanied by a really kick ass Hitchcock esque musical score. Instead of a long drawn out character establishment, the audience gets to figure shit out along with Jake Gyllenhaal. If you've seen the trailer, then you know what it's about. What makes the film so good was the one piece that's usually missing from most movies today; emotion. It was the first time I think I've ever liked watching Gyllenhaal. The movie has heart on top of great suspense and special effects. It was a lot of fun, and filled with great twists and characters. My favorite film of 2011 thus far.
