Review of Sound of Noise (2010) by Eric R — 10 Mar 2012
Amadeus was born into a family with a long storied history of famous musicians. This family dynamic has ironically enough made him hate music. He heads up the terrorist task force that discovers their city is under attack by Music Terrorirsts, whose desire is to rid the city of all shit music.
As you can imagine, Sound of Noise is an absurdest comedy that really embraces the absurdity of it's story, presenting everything with conviction and realism around this absurd concept. It's got a good amount of dry, comedic moments and has a surprising amount of heart.
Really, the film is about Amadeus, a man who has had to live in the shadows of his wildly successful brother. It's about him facing this hatred he has for music and coming to grips with himself. The musical numbers are really a lot of fun and even make an argument about how music is all around us and a part of our daily lives.
All this being said, the film does have some problems, which aren't glaring but should be mentioned. For one, the whole romantic subplot that exists is just completely unnecessary. Second, I do feel that the film's overabundance of energy during the musical numbers cannot be matched through the rest of the film, which does make the film drag a bit at times.
Sound of Noise is a inventive, unique comedic film that is light-hearted enough that it's flaws are masked by the wide grin I had.
