Review of Sound of My Voice (2011) by Casey B — 23 Sep 2012
A small and interesting little suspense drama that generated a bit of buzz when it aired at Sundance. it is the story of a documentary filmmaker and his girlfriend (Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius) who decide to infiltrate a small cultish group of followers who are making the claim that their leader, Maggie (Brit Marling - Arbitrage, Another Earth) is from the FUTURE.
The film plays on some mystery, mis-information and mis-understanding and is (much) left up to each individual to decipher what he/she sees within the film. Very little action occurs in Sound of My Voice but it kept my interest throughout .
.. and I could have actually sat through more of it (it is only 85 minutes long). As the entire film centers upon the unanswered question, the less said about it all the better. The filmmaking duo begin to question what is really happening within the group and an odd request for an innocent child befuddles them even more.
For being such a small, unknown film I was surprised that I found myself this entranced (yikes ... the cult!) with Sound of My Voice. See it and question it. Discuss it. I'm sure everyone will have a different interpretation of it even if they do have the same secret handshake.
