Review of Sound of My Voice (2011) by Marina N — 26 Sep 2012
This feels like it could have been a great TV drama or short story. As a film, I felt like there could have been a little bit extra. Not that it's a bad film by any means and for me the best part is not knowing whether the cult is brainwashing innocents or if Maggie really is from 2054 and preparing the world for cataclysmic events.
The problem is that the film has an answer and I think it could have benefitted from being more ambiguous. Brit Marling is very convinving as a charismatic and sometimes disturbing messianic/cult leader and the actors playing the documentary makers are solid too.
The depictions of cult initiation are quite chilling and the hints at the possible future tantalising yet vague enough to be utterly made up. It's worth joining the ride of deciding wheter it's a sham or not and your overall enjoyment of the film will possibly depend on the answer.
I liked it depsite preferring an open-ending.
