Review of Sound of My Voice (2011) by Steven M — 12 Nov 2012
I like sci-fi flicks that support two completely different interpretations. Total Recall (the 1990 version, I haven't seen the recent one) is one of these: Did he really go to Mars or was it an implanted memory? Both work. So is K-PAX: Is he an alien or is he a lunatic? Both work. Sound of My Voice aspires to be one of these movies. But unlike Total Recall or K-PAX, which fully and equally support both interpretations, The Sound of My Voice cheats with contradictory and irreconcilable facts in support of one interpretation or the other.
Being deliberately cryptic to avoid spoilers here, if the federal agent's well documented case were true, then what happened on the field trip would have been impossible. Conversely, in view of what happened on the field trip, the person at the center of the agent's case could not even exist. That said, Sound of My Voice is an entertaining and impressive early effort by young film makers. But it's still a cheat.
