Review of Sound City (2013) by Jerry D — 05 Feb 2013
I will preface this with the fact that I am a big Dave Grohl fan. This doc is near flawless. It's split into three acts, the first being the history of Sound City which is fascinating and fun to see the history and the gambles these guys took. Act two is the lamentation of digital sound and the final act is Grohl making great music with a cadre of musicians throughout all genres and eras of rock.
All three would have made excellent documentaries in their own aspect, adding all bits together make this a powerhouse of storytelling. It's a love letter to the bygone days of actually making music instead of clicking buttons. It's inspiring as a musician (or at least someone who fancies himself one) to see the creative process and that there is still a love for the analog style. It's refreshing and fun and it's not a complete knock on digital, as they state you can use it for good.
I think the entire movie can be summed up in this (paraphrased) line by Trent Reznor "with digital anyone can make a record now, but is it any good? most the time, no.".
Must watch for any fan of rock.
