Review of Soul Surfer (2011) by Sandy K — 31 Oct 2011
Based on a true story of a teenage girl who returned to her sport to become a top-rated surfer after losing an arm in a shark attack. The actors occasionally appear to be performing rather than inhabiting their roles, although they all are convincing (to my untrained eye) as surfers.
The Christian evangelistic angle isn't overplayed, for which I was thankful, since it is more powerful as a story of someone whose faith helped shape her resilience, rather than as someone who experienced tragedy as a part of "God's plan.
" However, the black looks (and even a black jersey in EVERY competition scene -- how cliched!) of her main competitor felt forced. Ultimately, what really makes the story resonate emotionally is the visually exquisite surfing sequences, where the girl's love for being on the water is viscerally felt.
