Review of Soul Men (2008) by Kevin L — 16 Mar 2009
Who would've thought that both Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson could have such great singing voices. A movie that demands the main actors to excel in vocal performances and they both hold their own ground.
The movie also has a cameo appearance/performance from the very unique John Legend. A movie that revolves around two old "has been" singers dubbed "The Real Deal" try to reignite their singing careers as their main singer passes away (John Legend) and they try to make it to the Apollo to perform one last time as a tribute to their deceased friend.
Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson are both spectacular at their parts and newcomer Sharon Leal adds a nice balance to the cast as this movie showcases the last time both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes step onto the movie stage, as they both suddenly pass away after filming this movie.
This movie is funny and brings you back in time with the Motown style music. There is a great tribute to the late Bernie Mac in the end credits that really show what Bernie Mac believed in. 4/5 stars.
