Review of Soul (2020) by Compi24 — 02 Jan 2021
A characteristically imaginative take on a topic we've all mused on since the beginning of time, Pixar's "Soul" presents a number of daring questions, answering most of them to an impressively satisfying degree and with incredible animation and design, to boot.
However, for the questions it doesn't answer and -- more importantly -- for the risky, wallop-packing creative choices it clearly skirts past, I'm left feeling a little bit more than remiss. In any case, the animation is Pixar's best to date (I feel like I'm reiterating that with every new release from the studio) and the voice cast perform their absolute hearts out.
I simply wish this was the absolute emotional thrill ride it appeared it was going to be, instead of what it actually is -- an earnest and creative endeavor, but one with a serious second act dip and a dishearteningly safe wrap-up.
