Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Gregory E — 10 Oct 2018
The debut of Boots Riley has a crushing confidence that--incredibly--doesn't seem cocky.
Riley is a better screenwriter than a director. There are moments that simply feel wasted and the majority of transitions are just off. The engaging premise and the weird absurd twists are more than enough to maintain the audience's attention, but the humor is way more absent than Boots himself would like to admit.
Don't get it twisted. This is probably the most original and creative movie of the year. And probably the most politically revolutionary. And in a moment of the historical cycle in which "the cool thing" is to support the perpetual capitalist system, that is greatly appreciated.
Special mention to the fantastic soundtrack of The Coup (Boots Riley's band) and Tune-Yards.
