Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by J R — 26 Jul 2018
I really wanted to love this movie and for the most part, I did. But I just can't get over the way the female characters - and that's barely plural with Detroit and Diana - were conceived. Detroit, a very attractive, creative and smart young woman, yet we are made to believe that she would date this broke ass dude living in his uncle's garage because he's "authentic." Diana, who is in just a handful of scenes is a complete idiot, who for some strange reason flirts with the protagonist. There must have been opportunities to empower the female characters a bit more and I don't mean by allowing Detroit to mess around with two guys.
Things I really did love: the cinematography, the actors, the story (well 90% of the story). I love how we can feel both pity and disappointment for Cassius.
