Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Liza L — 15 Oct 2018
FUCK THE RACISTS BRINGING THE RATING DOWN. NO TRUMP, NO KKK, NO FASCIST USA. Boots Riley is a goddamn American Hero. This movie is more realistic than the matrix and as accurate as 1984 was to George Orwell (who by the way was an imperialist guard in Burma [now Myanmar] and wrote about his participation in fascism).
As far as contemporary black canon, (Black Panther, Moonlight, Get Out, I Am Not Your Negro), STBY fills the missing narrative on labor unions, boycotting, and active political participation, Tessa Thompson is a breath of fresh air.
As a white person, I can confirm that the American "White Voice" is real and I appreciate BR's casting choices. This movie should receive an Oscar for original writing. There is a reason why this movie isn't popular: movie theaters are scared of its content and its potential influence on the political climate.
I would give this 6 stars if I could. This is a good movie to watch sober or stoned. Do not watch this movie on cocaine.
