Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Bob K — 21 Sep 2018

This movie started off as a really sharp satire of capitalism, and stayed that way for a while. It seemed like it was about to bog down as Steven Yeun's character increased the labor pressure on the telemarketing firm that many of the characters worked for, with some kind of predictable confrontation inevitable. Then the movie swerved waaaaay the hell off the rails. The last third was somewhere between goofy and insane, and goofy just left the building.

"WorryFree" is the company that offers people lifetime employment contracts in return for housing and food, a.k.a. slavery. Our protagonist Cassius Green ("Cash Green") becomes a powerseller with his impressive telephone sales, and his skills are put to use getting corporations to use WorryFree labor instead of actually paying people. He gets paid handsomely for expanding slave labor, in other words. He comes to the attention of the WorryFree CEO Steve Lift (an awesome jittery and intense Armie Hammer), who tells Cassius about the next stage for WorryFree, and it's bonkers. Meanwhile, Cassius' girlfriend Detroit, who briefly worked for the telemarketer, ditches him as a sell-out, and stages a one-woman performance art show with the theme of denouncing exploitation. It has to be seen to be believed.
