Review of Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Barry R — 08 Jul 2018
Saw this because it was a 100 degrees and it got such good reviews... Oof. This felt like if someone in freshman year of film school somehow got their first half-baked idea for a movie produced. Scattered, unstructured, confused plot, compelling but undeveloped 1 dimensional characters.
.. It was all bad but bearable in the first half, with a few mildly amusing and clever jokes/social commentary. Then the horse people showed up. It was then that I suddenly understood why Boots Riley had such a difficult time getting this flaming hot pile of garbage made.
You could almost hear him pitching this ridiculous social satire at parties: "and then he goes to a party and discovers a human/horse cross breed of slaves! wouldn't that be CRAZY?!" No Boots, it would be dumb.
Put the blunt down and try again. A shame, because the basic idea of an impoverished black man taking a telemarketer job and having to speak like a white man and work for corrupt forces to climb the social ladder is an interesting one.
But this is a good example of a movie that would've benefited from some serious editing help at the drawing board. Sorry, but I have to assume the high critic score here is a case of mostly white liberals afraid to seem un-woke.
Worst $18 I've ever spent.
