Review of Sorority Row (2009) by Michael G — 12 Apr 2010
The director and screenwriter for this film obviously share my disdain for the fraternity/sorority scene. They even managed to reduce the characters to such a level that one could believe this sorority was for women that could not get into college but wanted to live the sorority experience (such as it is) anyway. They weren't very bright!
And so they live that sorority sisterhood scene to the max. Parties, booze and sex are the norm here. Along with shallow relationships and equally shallow personal bonding. We are not talking Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants here. Anyway, the sorority lifestyle leads to a stupid accident and death that the main leads cover up. Then the movie gets nasty (in the scary way).
As graduation approaches (yes some school appears to have criteria low enough that these people can actually graduate), retribution comes calling for the sisters involved. But this was the part that was enjoyable. You like what happens to them and the film keeps you guessing as to who is doing it. So I actually got what I liked out of a horror movie - something bad happens, people die as retribution is taken and you have to keep guessing as to who is doing it.
So in the end it is entertaining despite it's flaws. And for those keeping score at home (this is not a spoiler to watchers of this genre of film), the "sluttiest" sister is the first to die. Some formulas just never change.....
