Review of Sophie's Choice (1982) by Stephen D — 29 Jul 2008
It's been said that Meryl Streep's performance here is one of the best of any actor captured on film, and I don't see any reason to doubt it. She is hauntingly heartbreaking as a Polish Catholic woman in 1947 Brooklyn who, though having survived the horror of Auschwitz, cannot escape the forces of guilt, grief, and death that threaten to engulf her.
The sense of tragedy is heightened all the more by Sophie grasping to hold onto a life where love and beauty can still be experienced. This film leaves an indelible impression as it poses the question of how hope can be maintained when a soul is butchered by the worst that human nature has to offer.
