Review of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) by David G — 24 Mar 2006
[b]I was stationed in Germany after WW II and worked with German youth to teach them democracy. I have suspected some of them knew about concentration camps and the murder of Jews and they don't talk about it.
This movie has shown that some knew about it and even risked and given their lives for what they felt about human decency. This is almost like the German version of Anne Frank. When I returned to Germany and see what life is now, it is hard to imagine that such an oppressive climate existed in the Hitler days.
When I was in Normandy and talked to the captured prisoners of war, I can see that they were not monsters, but humans caught in the web of the war. I am glad that there were protests by the students and that the spirit of what is right exists in most people.
