Review of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) by Cary C — 12 Nov 2007
Whilst I am not particularly fixated on war movies of any kind, I have to say that this fact-based movie really hooked and moved me. Essentially it is about 3 young people who looked at what was happening in Hitler's Germany, and were bold enough to question it and spread literature that heightened awareness of the truth.
Of course, the Nazi's were not pleased and took care to silence such thoughts rapidly, even if they were superbly argued and insightful. The film is an intimate experience as one immediately warms to the ideals and caring nature of Sophie in particular, and as details of her actual interrogation are revealed, the extent of her bravery dazzles all the more.
As a viewer, I was left really questioning if I would have made such a stand. I hope so, but like many, I daresay the fear of what might have happened to my loved ones could have silenced me . . . then again, I'm a bit of a tiger and I don't tend to let things drop if I really believe something, so who knows! Either way, this movie is a beautifully made journey worth sharing, every bit as affirming as it is unsettling.
Everyone should know about it.
