Review of Sophie Scholl: The Final Days (2005) by James B — 10 Nov 2013
Young people, particularly college students, are often some of the biggest supporters of protest movements. That was exactly the case with Sophie Scholl and her fellow anti-Hitler activists known as the White Rose.
While many people loved Hitler then and thought of him as the grand savior of Germany, many people were also morally opposed to his regime. Most of them lacked the courage to publicly oppose, knowing that it would mean absolute certain death.
The White Rose had to be very clandestine in getting their message across, and when they were finally caught, tragedy ensued. But Sophie Scholl's heroism lives on in the present day. In Germany, she is now regarded as a great hero, and at the University of Munich, where she was a student, a great memorial stands there in honor of her and the rest of the White Rose, and every year, a moment of silence is given in her honor.
This is a brilliant portrait of a woman not afraid to die for her beliefs and morals. 10/10.
