Review of Sonita (2016) by Douglas C — 17 Apr 2016
This is a wonderful movie about a young girl from Afghanistan who is living in Iran as an undocumented refugee after her parents try to sell her as a child bride. The film's director, originally interested in documenting refugees in Iran, is taken by her and her desire to become a rap singer, and decides to help her.
The director provides money and assistance which eventually leads to a new life for Sonita and a chance to pursue her dream. I saw this as part of the True/False Film Festival in Columbia MO and the showing was highlighted by Sonita's appearance following the film and singing her best known rap song.
A wonderful experience!
