Review of Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie (1996) by Caleb H — 31 Dec 2009
Though the title is misleading (it's actually a two-part OVA; not a movie) I must confess that I find this film rather entertaining, if nothing else.
My main problems with the film stem from the English voices. Though the acting itself is serviceable, the voices themselves -- with the exception of Robotnik -- are entirely inappropriate for the characters. Not to mention remarkably annoying.
On the positive side of things, though. I must say that I appreciate the loyalty to the themes and setting of the early SEGA genesis games. The presence of springs, spikes, and various enemies from the genesis games, are all little tips of the hat to the Sonic of the ye old blast processor days.
While I can't really recommend this movie for everyone, I can say that it's a HUGE bound above most video-game adaptations... for what that's worth...
