Review of Song of the South (1946) by Josh A — 05 Jul 2007
An imaginative film that really deserves a proper release on DVD. The last time this was released in theaters, I was still in grade school. I don't remember seeing it then, and now I only know it via bootlegs.
But, this film was a bold step in a new direction that would spawn classic films such as "Mary Poppins", "Bedknobs & Broomsticks" and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". The continual piracy of this movie on eBay and p2p networks only prove that it's value is not loss by some of its antiquated messages.
With a little bit of explanation, almost anyone can understand that while there does exist an aura of segregation and inequality in this movie, great lessons can be learned by seeing the changes and advances we've made today.
Atempting to erase history doesn't change its effect... it only stirs curiosity. Look for this one in the foreseeable future.
