Review of Song of the South (1946) by Tom L — 31 Aug 2007
CLASSIC! GREAT FILM! My favorite of the Disney films! While I can see how some have a problem with the race issues in the film, I disagree with them. It had a totally opposite impact on me, as a young child.
Who kept everything together, who taught the morals of life through unbelievable stories, and who CLEARLY had clearer values and sensibility - the Black workers (this is post-Civil War, they are not slaves).
The White family is struggle with marital issues, they can't keep track of their kid, they ignore the kid and don't give him any respect. As a small child, my grandparents brought me to see this film during it's last re-release, and my take then and still now is that Uncle Remus was the patriarch of the plantation family - and in that family I melded the Black people AND the White people together as one community.
Oh, and the cartoons are the BEST! I think there could be an interesting remake done with live action and PIXAR technology (plus more of Remus' tales)!
