Review of Song of the South (1946) by Lucy B — 02 Jan 2008
It's kinda funny how Disney embraces the song, but shuns the movie.
It's really a pretty good movie. The songs are obviously catchy, and the cartoons are very entertaining. James Baskett and Hattie McDaniel are very good in this. The script could have obviously used a little work...but it's a relic. It was made in 1946. I mean, it's slavery Disney-fied. It's not that bad really, if you take for what they really meant by it. They meant to translate the Uncle Remus tales into an entertaining cartoon. They had to deal with slavery somehow.
I have to admit, the story apart from the cartoons are a bit dry, and everybody except for Remus and McDaniel aren't very good. The little boy looks like a little girl. But I say watch it if you can. In the US, it's a rare opportunity.
