Review of Song of the South (1946) by Nick B — 27 Jun 2008
It's banned in the US, but I borrowed a copy from a friend. Now, I am extremely mad at Disney for hiding this treasure!!! It depicts black slaves working on a plantation, trying to be happy in their circumstance by glorifying God.
The movie chooses not to focus on the morality of slavery, but rather Uncle Remus' attempt to teach a little boy how to use his imagination to rise above the circumstances and trials of life. Disney is afraid of making the black community angry by releasing this movie in the US.
If you want a movie that shows the horrors of slavery, check out "Amazing Grace." If you want a movie that shows a white kid learning valuable life lessons from an old black man, this is the BEST.
