Review of Song of the South (1946) by Jonathan S — 10 Oct 2010
So it's no "Mary Poppins," but it's a great little movie that is only made more fascinating because of its controversy. Although it fails to present American slavery accurately, but c'mon, its a children's Disney movie, no one should be expecting "Roots.
" "Song of the South" teaches clever life lessons, features splendid songs and nice animation, and Uncle Remus is a lovable character. If for nothing else, this film should be appreciated as an ignorantly optimistic time capsule of white Disney America's view of race relations.
Ah...the 1940s.
