Review of Song of the South (1946) by Hunter D — 04 Nov 2010
It's a saccharine view of the old South and rather questionable in the race department, but SONG OF THE SOUTH really is a strange and interesting gem in the Disney catalog. I saw most of the movie ages ago and when I began watching it I thought I was really in for something boring and wretched, but once the movie really got going it started to interest me.
The combination of live action and animation is truly stunning for the time, as movies that would come later would try the same thing with worse results. I can understand why Disney is nervous about releasing it on video, however if they're smart about it they shouldn't have a problem, all they need to do is look at how well Warner handled the release of King Vidor's HALLELUJAH! Disney, give us SONG OF THE SOUTH on DVD (or Blu-ray for that matter) with a Donald Bogle commentary track.
I'll shell out the cash for it.
