Review of Song for a Raggy Boy (2003) by Jamie L — 03 Feb 2008
On the one hand, this film is deliciously poignant. It pulls at the heart strings because of its powerful pathos, its tragedy as well as its sense of hope. Many dramatic scenes, most of them involving violence or abuse.
The down side is that the pathos borders on being melodramatic, and in many ways the story is completely predictable. Because there are priests as villains, of course one has to be a pedophile. Then this movie plays out exactly the way you would expect it to-- the troublesome youth proves to have a heart of gold, the disillusioned hero regains his sense of hope, the ogre-type villains get punished, etc. Predictable, but powerful.
Still thoroughly enjoyed it.
