Review of Sonatine (1993) by Tokufumi N — 23 Dec 2007
Considering the aesthetic of violence in John Woo's movies, recent Hollywood productions, and something like No Country for Old Men (which I loved), Sonatine is at once refreshing and deeply interesting.
My favorite Beat Takeshi movie by far, and save a few cuts that I could have done without, the strength of this film is in the images it creates (isn't that the strength of most good films and books?), and made me rethink the message and meaning of violence in film and art.
