Review of Sonatine (1993) by X. T — 26 Jun 2008
Takeshi is a master of making you feel what the characters feel - the film's slow pace and the random moments of humour reveal the character's boredom and, in the case of Takeshi himself, depression.
Sonatine may have been an insight to Takeshi's own state of mind at this time of his life - maybe even a cry for help before his own depression caused him to drive his bike into a wall.
Sonatine is not a traditional Yakuza movie and like all Takeshi's films it sits in a genre all of it's own.
If you can stand the pace it's a fantastic thought provoking movie - one of Takeshi's best.
