Review of Son of Saul (2015) by Peter F — 04 Apr 2017
This was one of the most affecting movies I've ever seen. The visuals here are so matter of fact and in your face. It feels like you are there, in the concentration camp. You are there as people are marched into the gas chamber with lies about food and coffee to come. You are there as the bodies are dragged out and piled up. You are there as they burn them. Either in ovens or in giant piles because they ran out of room. This is truly horrifying stuff. Especially to know this actually happened. People actually did this to other human beings.
And all that is just the surrounding background to the more direct story of one determined man to give a proper burial to a little boy.
This is great film-making. Right from the start you care about this man, and what he hopes to accomplish, as crazy it seems.
I know it's harsh material but I truly do recommend this. If only to get a little perspective in your life.
