Review of Son of Saul (2015) by Visfor V — 29 Feb 2016
You're kidding me. How do you create a movie about the Holocaust that can't draw one ounce of emotion out of me. The way it was filmed was unwatchable. During the opening scene, I was thinking, "OMG, the whole movies not going to be like this? No, this is just an opening, and they settle in to tell a story... ".
Never happened. The camera angles were unbearable, the characters had no emotion. I understand that concentration camp can sap your life, but you at some point have to build characters.
Speaking of concentration camp, No-one there looked like concentration camp material. They were healthier than prisoners of war, much less concentration camp victims.
A movie shouldn't leave me guessing what the story is, what the characters' motivations might have been. I don't mind a movie that leaves you something to talk about, but not one that makes you create a story where one doesn't exist.
I think people are afraid to tall it because it's a Holocaust movie, and was filmed in an innovative style. Will it fails to draw emotion, and that means it's completely fails.
