Review of Son of Rambow (2007) by Pau B — 04 Feb 2009
"Son of Rambow" is a well made, touching, funny, heartfelt piece of moviemaking that is more than worth the ninety-six minutes it'll take you to watch it. The story is about the fatherless son in a Plymouth Brethren family in 1980's England.
A local hooligan exposes him to a pirated copy of "First Blood," and after seeing a movie for the first time ever the little boys life is changed forever. This is a movie about friendship, family, loyalty, and it's all crammed together in an exceptionally interesting visual package by director Garth Jennings.
The child actors are surprisingly good for their age, and the adult actors aren't too shabby either. Admittedly the script isn't perfect. There are points during the film where it stumbles and could have used some tweaking, and you could at least make the argument that it's maybe a bit TOO sweet at times for its own good.
The film does however give you exactly what the trailer tells you it's going to give you, and for the most part I don't see how you can't enjoy it as a whole. Is "Son of Rambow" the best film of this kind that's ever been made? Naw, of course not.
Are you going to like it? As long as you have a heart, or aren't a complete idiot who's expecting to see an actual sequel about the actual son of John Rambo, then yes - without a doubt yes.
