Review of Son of Godzilla (1967) by Steve J — 15 Mar 2008
The most hideous Godzilla suit of ALL TIME. With that said, this movie is much better than its reputation. The human plot is original enough to work, and the interactions between Godzilla and son, Minya, are very entertaining to watch.
Miyna gets a lot of complaints amongst Godzilla fans but I have always enjoyed the character for what he was.
On the effects side, Minya himself is somewhat inconsistant, with his newborn incarnation being an ugly puppet that grows into a suit that straddles the line between ugly and cute. Godzilla is downright hideous, but the other monsters in Kamakiris (giant mantis) and Kumonga/Speiga (giant spider) are excellently executed, and the fights are as good as they can be between the mismatched opponents.
