Review of Son of Godzilla (1967) by Blais E — 21 Feb 2011
Often-and-unfairly maligned installment in the 60's Godzilla film series, featuring the Big G's attempts at parenting after taking a dough-faced, chubby little Muppet-like baby something-or-other (Later called Minilla/Minya-) under his wing and teaching him how to stand up against the malevolent fellow inhabitants (Giant Preying Mantises and an enormous and hideously-ugly arachnid-) of their South Pacific Island.
Predictably, a band of Japanese jerks are along for the ride, adding nothing to the storyline, basically there to stretch out the film's running time in between the monster bouts. Featuring Toho's usual calibre of special effects; however, the techniques used to bring the giant insects and spider to life (They are essentially large marionettes, and the puppetry utilized is probably the best I've seen anywhere-) are superb.
