Review of Son of God (2014) by Steve G — 02 Mar 2014
Disparity between critics & viewers? Shocking!
In reality, it was well-presented pageant. I appreciate the motive & sincerity. But there's one thing that you need in a movie about the most charismatic & authoritative figure who ever lived... an actor to play the part. If that doesn't work, the rest falls apart. Sadly, the main character in this film had little room to work between smiling and crying. It truly was boyish & difficult to take seriously. I feel badly, since he seemed so earnest. But there has to be some greater weight to playing the most important persona that ever lived. (After Robert Powell, I'm not sure anyone should be allowed to play Jesus, again).
The one thing that really irked me, however, was the overly-Catholic Mary-cult obsessing. She was given as much face-time during the crucifixion as Jesus. The story is about God paying the price for redemption, not the emotions of a middle-aged Jewish woman. There were a few other extra-biblical Catholic notions that made me cringe. That aside, I do wish the best for this movie. But one can't help but think that, despite the good, it was a wasted opportunity.
Also, I didn't think that the blooper reel during the end credits was particularly fitting.
